James Ruskin - Biography:

A lot has happened in the six years since James Ruskin’s third studio album ‘Into Submission’ (Tresor, 2001) hit the ground like a dancefloor wrecking ball. Computers have become studios, digital downloading has revolutionised the music industry and the boundaries between rock and dance music have become increasingly blurred. Similarly, in the same period Ruskin has rebuilt his studio, started a family and suddenly last year lost his best friend and Blueprint co-founder, Richard Polson. Taking stock of all these experiences and developments brings us to a new composition that is a huge step in Ruskin’s musical development and fitting testament to the inspiration and life of a close friend. Forming a massive leap in sound that joins the dots between his previous dancefloor savvy material with intricate basslines, beautiful melodies and hypnotic rhythms, ‘The Dash’ is the mark of an artist in full control of his sound.

Ruskin`s early exposure to musical alternatives via active radio and club scenes affected his own need for self-expression and identity through music. The rampant electro, hip-hop and emerging Detroit techno scenes channelled his influences toward more electronic sources enough to inspire his own productions in the early 90s. His step toward DJing had already been made in 1991 and his blinding mixing style was earning him top spots across the UK and eventually worldwide by 1996, coinciding with his and Polson’s first releases as ‘Outline’ on the emerging force that was Blueprint.

With Ruskin constantly delivering the Blueprint message to the clubs, his own production signature became more frequent, resulting in his first solo releases on Blueprint, spawning classic club tracks such as ‘The Divide’ and ‘After Dark‘ whilst his collaborations with Surgeon, Polson’s Surface imprint and Oliver Ho’s Meta label and remix work brought his name to a wider audience. With the focus on British techno sharpened by the late nineties, the scene' s welcome reaction to his ‘Further Design’ (Blueprint, 1997) debut album propelled his name and motivation still further. Already a guest DJ at Berlin’s infamous Tresor sweatbox he was to begin a long-standing musical relationship with the label that continues today. Two albums, ‘Point 2’ (2000) and ‘Into Submission’ (2001) quickly followed, cementing his sound within the world’s electronic elite and then Ruskin took a back seat from production, regrouped and developed new strategies.

“I didn’t feel over that period that I had what I needed to complete an album,” says Ruskin of his six year hiatus. “I didn’t want to put an album out with no real point or focus so I continued working on various tracks and remixes whilst I rebuilt my studio and looked at different ways of working. There was a long break because I didn’t want to keep doing the same thing, I wanted to explore different ideas and new production techniques.”

These new techniques have spawned a sound full of depth and atmosphere whereby basslines become melody hooks and tracks such as the opening sequence link four different sections together like a conductor building and bridging the composite segments of a concerto. The dancefloor is never far away but the warm; tunnel like encasement of sound cocoons the listener into the subtle layers of the album’s myriad hidden depths. ‘The Dash’ may well still be about electronic body movement but this is also just as much about mind and soul.

The album has a feel that traverses from home listening to James’s incessant nocturnal realm of DJing with consumate ease. Consistently headlining clubs and festivals throughout Europe and beyond as one of the UK’s most revered techno DJs, the album gives us glimpses into a twilight world full of sweaty handshakes, dimly lit clubs and smoke filled caverns. Now incorporating a computer into his DJ sets, which has effectively become the third turntable, it has allowed him to explore and return to classic house and electro tracks that simply could not previously fit into his sets. “I can now layer sounds underneath old tracks to counteract the sonic deficiencies they have with modern records and manipulate them far beyond what you can achieve solely with vinyl,” he says of his re-shaped DJ sets. Similarly old house records were literally too slow to play but Ruskin’s use of new technology has helped to bring those elements back and join the sounds of his formative years with modern techno compositions.

Whilst the first two Tresor albums, ‘Point 2’ and ‘Into Submission’, were integrally linked and part of a more extreme sound, ‘The Dash’ marks a new beginning in many ways. “It’s not as forceful as the previous two albums,” he points out. “My aim was to try to bridge the gap between music designed to listen to and music I would use as a DJ at the weekend” and Ruskin’s slow burning fourth studio album achieves this objective in abundance

Mark Broom - Biography:

Since the start of 90s, Former East Londoner now Norfolk based Mark Broom has always been a name that is synonymous with the UK electronic music scene. A truly prolific artist, he has a myriad of production credits to his name having worked with world renowned labels such as Mo-Wax, Warp, R&S, Soma, Ifach (with Baby Ford ) Bpitch Control, Platzhirsch,Rotary Cocktail, Material and more recently 2020 vision It all started in the summer of 89 when he landed in Tenerife on vacation and stumbled across the delights of the emerging sounds of Chicago & Acid House. Returning to the UK, he immediately went in search of this new found music a pair of turntables were bought and with it, a musical career was born. A regular customer at London’s Fatcat record store, Mark found himself at the epicenter of a burgeoning scene. In 92, a certain Pete Baby Ford was on the scout for Djs to play at his new Club Night, Nude. When a mix tape was put directly in to his hands, Marks turntable skills were soon in demand. A short time afterwards, he found himself in being introduced to Ed Handley and Andy Turner from the infamous Black Dog Productions. The meeting brought about the foundations of a solid studio partnership, with the trio putting together a string of releases for the seminal General Productions Records, all recorded at UXB studios. Run by a certain Dave Hill, after two years of coming and going to his east London hideout, Dave approached Mark about making some music together. From there, a longstanding partnership was spawned with the founding of Pure Plastic Recordings in 1994. With the label having played host to some of Marks finest work, the release of the classic Angie is a shoplifter LP in 1996 cemented his reputation as a leader in the scene. In 2001, further notable success was scored with the writing of Rue East’s Indoor Culture Lp alongside Dave Hill. An album which brought about the massive techno classic, Birmingham. Marks services as a Dj and re-mixer have also been in high demand over the past two decades having played around the globe at some of the worlds best clubs: from Fuse to Fabric, to La real and Florida 135 and, he has also had the pleasure of reworking material from artists such as Steve Rachmad, Ken Ishi, The Advent, Eddie Flashin Fowlkes, Ben Sims and more recently Mason on Great stuff. Mark has recently signed to 2020 vision for 3 ep's the first " Black Russian ep " already proving very popular amongst the masses. Sunil Sharpe - biography:

Coming through the traditional DJ route of pirate radio, outdoor raves and working on the front line of a record shop, Sunil Sharpe is one of Ireland’s most celebrated underground DJs. Honing his turntable skills in the late ‘90s, Sunil played his first club gigs at the end of 2000 – gaining a formidable reputation for his quick fire mixing and fast paced sets that were soon to be heard regularly at clubs across the country. Before long he was invited to play at Berlin’s legendary Tresor Club in 2001 - the first of many European based events he has played at since.

Sunil is a tutor at Bray Institute of Further Education, where he has taught the DJ Techniques class each year since 2005, sharing his knowledge in many areas of dj-ing and the music industry. He has also been part of national station RTE 2FM’s ‘Late Night Sessions’ team since 2006 (after a long run on both local and pirate radio), where each month he supplies his favourite new selections of music as well as live recordings from recent gigs.

Sunil’s production output has moved steadily, mostly since 2006. He has recorded for labels such as Tonewrecker, Bastardo Electrico, Open Source and his own Mantrap Recordings – a label (of “full-blooded techno, electro and experimental flavours”) he established in December 2007, which despite an irregular release schedule, has become a favourite with some of the scene’s leading djs and tastemakers.

In 2009 Sunil coordinated club events at DEAF (Dublin Electronic Arts Festival) in its sadly last but arguably best year. It was during this that he formed ‘Earwiggle’ – which has become a series of one-off gigs in Dublin, hosting the debut Irish appearances of acts like Planetary Assault Systems, Adam X, Ancient Methods and Reeko. After a near 8-year spell working at Spindizzy record shop (2002-10), Sunil has made the move to All-City where he recently established a space for new & secondhand techno/electro/house vinyl under the Earwiggle banner.

2011 sees the release of two new eps by Sunil on Labrynth and Takeover, with various tracks and remixes on other labels to come. A firm believer in playing the very best records he has rather than only the new, Sunil’s DJ sets reflect his favourite styles from the past up to the present, with his trademark techno energy showing no sign of letting up.

The Fuse resident is a true purveyor of the Brussels underground as DJ and producer since 1993, he's considered by many as a man with multiple musical talents: from straight-up dance floor jackin' techno to advanced abstract electronica. His music has been released on his own labels Time To Express and Foton as well as through Berlin's Lan Muzic, the mysterious Komisch and Brussels-based Meakusma. Last year also saw him release the high regarded album "Entropic City" He's active as a DJ, producer, sound designer and composer for contemporary dance and theatre.

On warm up duties will be long term DJ Brain "Madzer" Cairns as he makes his Test debut. Brian's been knocking around Dublin for a good few years now, currently involved with Rob Hatchell & Jay Grogan in Dublin's techno night 'Discipline'. The Discipline night is relatively new, however they are leading the way with their own take on industrial techno and general Cairnage(see what we did there). Their night has already seen top guests such as DJ Skirt and Hoth Systehm rock the Mezz room in the Twisted Pepper. We here at the Test bunker are big fans of Discipline and Brian's mixes. Madzer's well known for his tougher take on techno, however this night will see him show his range and take a more deeper approach than usual.

Legend has it that on a stormy night in Kerry many moons ago, three wise men appeared after traveling through the desert storm bearing three gifts. Two of the men carried a turntable, the other a mixer. A sudden bolt of light exploded and through the haze of mist appeared one man dressed in nothing but a Wu Tang T-shirt .

This freak of nature, with slick assassin like DJ skills has been Banging Techno Clubs across Kerry, Cork and Dublin ever since. Some call this man Jesus, others simply some call him "The Prez". Call him what you like, this man's got mad skillz.

We welcome this month's namesake, Derrick May, to pop his Test cherry on Saturday the 22nd, who will be taking over the Test basement for a 4 hour set..

Part of the first wave of Detroit DJs and producers who introduced techno to the world, May classics like 'It is what It is', 'Nude Photo' and 'Strings of Life' were played in every dance club, from the Music Institute in Detroit to the Asylum, an institute in Dublin.

According to techno folklore, May took all his clothes off and cried for a day after making 'Strings of Life'.

This might explain why he hasn't been back in the studio since the early 90s, but there is no doubt his catalogue still provides inspiration for techno makers and DJs worldwide.

Support comes from ex-EC big man Giles Armstrong, who won't be crying, even though it's not his party. The daddy (G) of Dublin techno will provide the deep house sounds for Del Boy's classic Detroit set from the comfort of his Clondalkin Traktor.

That's right, Sandwell District take over Test and the tag team of Regis and Function armed with laptops, Fx Processors, Roland SH 101 and a TR 909 it's going to be dark techno all night long (Plagiarism! - House music ed).

With roots in the crazy and very hazy days of 90s techno, the pedigree of Regis and Function is unquestionable: Regis's work on Downwards was central to the development of the Birmingham sound, while Function's bleepy adventures for Synewave still resonate.

Working together with Silent Sevant, Female and CH Signal Laboratories for the mysterious Sandwell label, this dynamic duo's music has proved unstoppable (Find your own metaphors! - Batman editor).

Merging Millsian panel-beating with resonating Sleeparchive/Sahko-alike subsonics and Downwards' chain mail metallic percussions to create a familiar yet fresh-sounding sound and stride the techno world like a Colossus (stop paraphrasing! - Shakespeare editor)

It's with our deep regret to inform you all that Robert Hood will not be performing at Test in the Twisted Pepper tonight. Due to "maintenance" issues with Delta airlines Robert Hood was unable to make his scheduled flight to Dublin. We are already rescheduling a date for his return in the not so distant future.

But where one Delta let's us down, another Delta is here to back us up. Delta Funktionen will perform a live set for us and for the headline slot we will see him transform into his Phantom Regiment guise to tear the basement down. Expect tough dark techno. Starting the night and building the transformation between the two, will be Test ressie Dan Mc Elligott.

Tickets for the original date remain valid for the rescheduled date in October.

Representing Chicago's south-side, the one and only ghetto fabulous DJ Funk pops his Test cherry. Rumours of Funk's demise have been greatly exaggerated and the funk-master is itching to give it up the Brenda Twitter to all the girls (and deviant boys) in the club. With an expletive-laden catalogue that runs deeper than a KFC family bucket for labels like Dance Mania, Pro-Jex Cosmic and erm Funk, Chuck Chambers is gonna get freaky with feminist anthems like 'Work that Big Booty', 'Get it from the Back', 'Pump It' and 'Bitches'.

In the basement, Convextion aka enigmatic Texan producer Gerald Hanson flies the confederate flag. We were happier than an oil baron on holiday in Iraq when Gerald made his Irish debut at Test last year, and we're honoured that he's back to perform his magical, mysterious deep techno releases on Down Low and his frontier-conquering electro, which he puts out as (Wyatt) Erp.

Also featuring in this whopper super duper yanky doodle sandwich, we have the fine icicle sounds of Irelands very own eskimo, Mick Chillage. Mick has been producing music since late 1996. His productions cover a variety of genres, techno,house,electro, IDM, ambient, dub, minimal etc, sometimes fusing all these styles in to one track. His focus is mainly on atmosphere melody & emotion & prefers to create all this from scratch rather than sampling someone else's work.

After years of pissing in the wind, while working, like , very hard we have finally found ourselves moving the club night to a Saturday night in the Twisted pepper to take the place of the recently defunct Electric Shock. Its a huge pair of boots to fill but we have been working on a killer line up!

Our first night shall be on the 16th Jan and we shall be showcasing the Manchester record label Modern Love.

A new year brings changes to Test as it moves to the Twisted Pepper basement on Saturday nights.

We mark the first month of the new decade with a showcase from Manchester's mighty Modern Love label.

Representing the UK's most respected techno stamp are dub techno producer Claro Intelecto aka Mark Stewart. With a number of albums to his credit, as well as the defining 'Warehouse Sessions' series, Stewart recently branched out into deep house with the release of 'Chadderton'.

The label's other main act, Andy Stott, is also performing. Still only in his 20s, Stott has produced a body of work that belies his youth. Be it grungy acid classics like 'Demon in the Attic', the lurching dubstep of 'Night Jewel' or the sensuous house that intermittently featured on his debut album, the common feature in all of Stott's productions - and his incendiary live shows - are his heavy basslines and resonating beats.

Support comes from Test's Richard Brophy, who'll be spinning everything from rare UB40 remixes to Mike Dehnert releases.

After a great performance from US housemeister Levon Vincent, Test welcomes another new school talent, with German techno producer Mike
Dehnert making his Irish debut on Friday, December 11th at the Mezz @Twisted Pepper.

While Mike has been making music since 2000, it's only in the past two years that his releases have won him international acclaim.

Dehnert's own Fachwerk label is the main outlet for his chord-heavy, moody take on dance floor house and techno, but he also released two killer EPs on Clone's new Bassment sublabel this year.

Mike is one of the most in demand new acts in European electronic music, so we're delighted he's performing for Test.

Get down early to check the man with the big techno sound blow the intimate room apart!

Hi all,

Test returns to the Mezz this month with the Irish debut of the irrepressible Levon Vincent.

Although he started releasing music back in 2002, it's only in the past year that this veteran of NY clubs has wooed the house and techno worlds with releases on Novel Sound, Deconstruct, Underground Quality and Ostgut.

Mixing classic US house textures with the tough metallic rhythms of European techno, Levon's work has been championed by the Hardwax store and the Berghain coterie of DJs, including Klock, Galligan, sorry, I meant Dettmann, Steffi and Faki.

Although still based in the States, Levon is a regular visitor to Europe and can regularly be heard rocking clubs like Tape, Berghain and Robert Johnson.

We're delighted that he's playing for Test - get down early on the 27th November to the Mezz in the Twisted Pepper to check this new underground hero out.

Moving on...

So you can probably guess by the headline that there are some changes in the air - and you're right. Friday September 25th marked the last night for Test at the Underground. The club has hosted some amazing artists at the venue over the past 18 months
(Redshape, Sleeparchive, The Advent, DMX Krew, Dopplereffekt, Decal, Substance, Dan Bell, Regis, Function, Deetron, Convextion, Robert Hood, James Ruskin, Shawn Rudiman, Donato Dozzy, Lerosa),
but it was just not working out at the Underground. The staff were all great to work with, as were all the guests who came from near and far.

Later this month - Friday October 30th, to be precise - Test starts up at its new home in the mezz section of the Twisted Pepper, with a residents' line up. The space is a good bit smaller than the Underground, but has all the right requirements - a small blacked out room with a great sound system and a DJ booth right at eye level - to suit Test's purposes.

Anyway, thanks again to all the staff, guests and, most importantly, punters who came down to the club - hopefully see you at the new home.

Rudiman’s entrance to electronic music started at the end of the 80s through his involvement in the ebm/industrial act THD (Total Harmonic Distortion).

By the mid-90s however he was tired of body music and began making techno. Since then, he has released a series of stripped back, club-friendly interpretations of Detroit techno on Dan Bell’s 7th City as well as Dust Science, Matrix and his own Technoir Audio label.

A regular visitor to Ireland over the years, we’re looking forward to him rocking the Underground with one of his 100% live shows.

Support comes from Dublin producer Americhord aka Maura O’Boyle. With releases on D1 and Diaspora, we’re looking forward to hearing Maura’s distinctive take on electro and techno at Test for the first time.

Test welcomes back an old friend/guest this Friday , Conan O Donnell. Conan was one of the first people to grace the 1's unt 2's back in the day with his high flying quick chopping and cutting techno sets. After making his debut at Test he went onto many great things supporting the likes of Deetron, Si Begg and Distance. Expect to here a nonchalant style of mixing featuring the best of dub step wobble with lashings of electro and techno.

Support comes straight outta da Braytrix, in the form of Michael Gaffney. For years and years there have been fabled stories of this man and his amazing record collection and skills to match. In a true drexciyan style, Michael sets are as rare as a sighting of Kaiser Söze at the Bray Aquarium. Michael will be spinning out some killer robot electro from the 313 and beyond.

Hi all,

Test welcomes O/V/R, techno's latest super group, to the Underground this month for their debut Irish gig.

Consisting of Blueprint boss James Ruskin and Regis aka Karl O'Connor of Downwards/Sandwell District fame, the collaboration follows the dissolution of the Regis & Surgeon partnership last year.

To date, O/V/R have only put out one single, the dense, panning 'Interior' on Blueprint as well as a remix of Ruskin's 'Lahaine'.

However, given that they've both been making cutting edge techno for the past 15 years and the praise their two decks and two laptop shows have already received, expect to hear hard, minimalist music of the highest quality.

Support comes from EC's Giles Armstrong, armed with the best deep and dubby techno that the blogs, sorry, Beatport have to offer.

Test packs an overnight bag on the 3 July and hogs the cheap seats for a short journey to the Button Factory, where we’re hosting a one-off bash at in association with Nightflight..

Flying in for the show and making his third appearance for Test is mysterious German producer Redshape.

With his debut album due this year and two excellent new singles out on Present and Delsin - this show is part of Delsin’s European tour - the redshaped one’s live set will focus on killer deep Detroit techno and full blooded Chicago jack.

He’s joined by Scottish techno DJ/producer Vince Watson on warm up duties.

Watson, who also features on Delsin’s new compilation, has put out deep techno classics like ‘Mystical Rhythm’, ‘Moments in Time’ and ‘Aurelon’ on labels like Alola, Ibadan, Bio, Rotation and Planet E.

Test returns in April with a highly-anticipated appearance from the godlike Rob Hood.

Since the early 90s, the Detroit native has been pushing the boundaries of dance floor techno.

The architect of minimalism, Hood's 90s releases like 'Minimal Nation', 'Internal Empire' and 'Nighttime World' are classic works,joining the dots between searing, visceral rhythms, hypnotic repetition and jazz-infused musicality.

Hi everyone,

We welcome a very special guest to Test on Friday, March 27th as
revered US producer Convextion makes his Irish debut.

Convextion, real name Gerard Hanson, hails from Dallas, Texas, but his
intricately woven electro and techno sounds like it came from Detroit
than the good ole southern state, with some Basic Channel/Chain
Reaction influences thrown in for good measure.

Working as Convextion or ERP, Hanson has been releasing music since
1995, but has put out a small but inspired body of work for Matrix,
Down Low, AW and Frustrated Funk.

The enigmatic producer's back catalogue includes his 2006 debut album,
'Convextion', a benchmark techno release - and his recent ERP remixes
of Hardfloor even lent the German acid nutters a sense of gravitas.

An infrequent visitor to Europe, this booking has been a long time
coming and has involved more detailed negotiations than the pension
levy talks, but we're excited and delighted to be host Convextion's
first live show in Ireland. We hope you enjoy the show as much as we
will.

Support comes from the interstellar robot forces of Lunar disko's Barry Donovan and Dublin bus disko's Louis Scully.

Hi everyone,

Friday February 23rd sees the highly-anticipated return of The Advent
aka Cisco Ferreira to Test.

One of electronic music's most inspired producers and nicest geezers,
Cisco has been around since techno's zero hour.

He worked with CJ Bolland on the Belgian producer's 'The 4th Sign'
and, together with former partner Colin McBean released 'Elements of
Life', a surefire classic that still sound fresh 15 years later.

Now based in Portugal, Cisco has continued to fly the flag for killer
electro and hard-edged techno with releases on Tresor, Drumcode and
his own Kombination Research label.

The last time he played for us, at our old haunt, The Cavern, his
bodypopping, jack-tracking live set reduced the capacity crowd to a
sweaty mush.

Don't miss this chance to catch a true techno player in action.

Support comes from Rory St. John and Dan Mc Elligott.

Rory is no stranger to the Dublin techno scene, appearing on many techno line up going back as far as the 'Switch' days. Since he turned his attentions away from DJing and more towards producing electronic music, Rory has gone from strength to strength. His first release on Irish based Mantrap records has received kudos from across Europe and has been featured in many of Dave Clarkes sets. Expect some hard looping techno complimented with some deeper and funky sounds.

Dan Mc Elligott will be starting off the night with blend of uber choons.

Test sets vol 2 : Dan McElligott - Black Box Testing

Back in 2005, when Test was a very small club based in the small bunker like bar of Viva on South William street, a young chap who goes by the name of Dan Mc Elligott horsed a CD in my face and ordered me to listen to it. As it would turn out this mix CD lead to him playing at his first gig at Test and from there he has never looked back. Over the years he has earned a lengthy residency with the premium techno club in Dublin such as Electric city and Test. Dan is no stranger to bringing the buzz to the floor and has meandered his way through various high powered support slots, supporting the likes of Tractile, Marc Houle, Magda, Sleeparchive, Redshape, Efdemin, Phonic, Cassy, Paco Osuna & Donnacha Costello.
Dan will be whackin out the tunes at Test in Febuary playing supporting to the Advent.

DEETRON (Music man), PAUDI AHERN (Test) & RICHARD BROPHY (Test)

Hi everyone,

Test makes its first appearance in 2009 with a highly anticipated gig
from Swiss DJ Deetron on Friday January 23rd at the Underground,
Dublin.

Known to his nearest and dearest as Sami Geiser, this Alpine techno
rocket has been throwing his weight and considerable talent behind the
decks since the mid 90s and is one of Europe's most talented DJs.

While he moved many mountains with his fresh take on loopy/tribal
techno at the start of this decade - check 'Alien Entertainment',
'Vertigo' and 'Muchachos Ritmicos' - for labels like Music Man, SLS,
Hardgroove and Rotation, it's behind the decks that Deetron really
impresses.

His 2002 'In The Mix' selection for Music Man united European and US
techno and house new and old in a uniquely frenetic style, bearing
more 18-carat treasures than a Zurich bank vault, while his latest mix
for Fuse provides an equally compelling house/techno tracklisting and
three-deck mixing that's smoother than virgin snow.

Sami has diversified in recent years, releasing an artist album,
'Twisted', for Music Man and even working with vocalists on tracks
like 'Let's Get Over It', but we're looking forward to him rocking
down the house in his inimitable way.

Test's own Deetron lookalike Richard Brophy and Paudi Ahern start the
Swiss roll with some Chicago, Dutch and Detroit sounds early on.
